These are exciting “High” times for several states that have legalized recreational use of Cannabis while benefiting from a windfall in tax revenue. However, while many other states are considering legalizing the recreational use of Cannabis, others are still contentious regarding the Medical use of Cannabis.
Several politicians, such as Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Steve Katz (ironically arrested for pot possession,) have vowed to fight legalizing the medical use of cannabis claiming that there are no scientifically proven or researched medical use for cannabis. Even the “Top Drug Enforcement Cop” in the U.S., DEA chief Chuck Rosenberg claimed the premise of marijuana as a medicine a “joke.” Science says otherwise and all of these individuals are simply “Science Deniers.”
Epilepsy has been looming large in the news for the few past years, thanks mostly to the work of Dr. Sanjay Gupta in the groundbreaking CNN documentary, “Weed” back in 2013. In “Weed” the viewer learns of a very young child,Charlotte who suffers greatly from epilepsy. Charlotte endures high and frequent doses of very dangerous medication. Weed recounts the family’s search for relief for their stricken child, a not too uncommon experience of hundreds of parents nation wide. Charlotte is described as “the girl who is changing medical marijuana laws across America” on the Wikipedia article, Charlotte’s Web.
What astounded me during my research was that the knowledge that cannabis relieved epilepsy existed for several decades and was even once touted as a “Cure.” Utah is one of those states debating the Medical use of Cannabis and many in the state are not convinced that cannabis has medical value. This is a bit of irony since Utah was once in the forefront of Cannabis research. In 1949, Dr. Jean Davis and Dr. Louis Goodman with the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Utah were at the forefront of Medical Marijuana Research as it relates to Epilepsy.
For decades the U.S. government, Presidents, DEA, FDA and a host of other voices have told us that there was “No Medical Use” for cannabis. This has been a lie. The U.S. government has a “Patent” on the medical use of cannabis. Here is an excerpt from the “Abstract” from the patent.
“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes Cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of Wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The Cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia….”
Recently, medical researchers speaking in the news have commented that half of all cancers, heart disease and diabetes as being caused by Inflammation, or in other words they are an Inflammatory Response. Half! More recent research shows that states that have legalized the medical use of cannabis have seen a reduction in Opioid overdoses and deaths. Yet there still are those who see no benefit in legalizing cannabis for medical use. Still, the Government, the Congress, the President, the DEA have not pushed for cannabis to be taken off of “Schedule One” status. Continued Schedule One Status greatly hampers the medical community in researching, or prescribing Marijuana / Cannabis, to the detriment of patients all over this nation.
Did you or anyone you love suffer needlessly from any of the following diseases mentioned in the patent? Did anyone you love or know die in agony from any of the following diseases mentioned in the patent?
- Inflammatory disease
- Autoimmune disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- HIV
- Epilepsy
- Neuropathy
- Acute or Chronic Pain
“He who owns the patent controls the technology.” My opinion, allowing people to suffer and die for political or personal gain, or belief is a crime. When an organization or government, in the face of facts does it, it is a crime against humanity.
